How to shop for clothes on a budget

I would not believe you if you say that you don’t love to shop for clothes on a budget. I understand the fact that some of us love to shop and others don’t love it that much. However, we’ve all got to wear clothes regularly.

Clothes are expressive and add to your personality however, they can be really expensive. Nonetheless, we don’t necessarily have to break the bank to have a decent closet filled with stylish clothes that can be worn numerable times.

It is possible to update your existing wardrobe or even completely replace them with new ones without creating a hole in your pockets.

With extraordinary fashion hacks, I will help you make the most of what you already own. This post will also teach you all the effective ways to shop for fashionable clothes on a budget.

Here is a list of things that needs to be done to shop for stylish clothes on a budget.

1) Buy generic basics and build a capsule wardrobe
Basics like a tank top, cami, jeans, and cute skirts go with every piece of clothing. The best thing is they never go out of style. What we ought to do to save our money is to buy such items and build a capsule wardrobe out of it. This is one of the best ways to shop for your clothes on a budget.

Most importantly, we need to understand what a capsule wardrobe is. A capsule wardrobe comprises few flattering clothing from all the categories. These are the clothes that you love in terms of colors and designs. These clothing items go well with each other so you can mix and match them uniquely as per your preference.

A capsule wardrobe allows you to create many stunning outfit combinations. This way, you will have the liberty to create many outfits. Therefore, consider creating a capsule wardrobe and you won’t have to shop for any more clothing.

2) Shop for opposite seasons
You must have heard that you should shop for opposite seasons, the reason is pretty obvious. During early spring, retailers get rid of winter item and during early fall, they get rid of their summer clothes. During this time of the year, there’s a tremendous sale with markdown in prices of quality garments.

However, you need to ensure to not shop for trendy clothes because they go out of style very soon. What we should rather do is, stick to classics that can be worn for a longer period.

Shopping off-season demands a lot of patience as you will have to wait longer to wear those clothes. It is worth the patience since, this is one of the best ideas to shop for clothes on a budget. Next time you shop, simply wait up until there’s a clearance sale.

3) Choose quality clothing over cheap
I would never buy a piece of clothing just because it is on a sale for a dollar for I know that I will never wear that. You need to remember that there are times when it’s worth spending a few extra dollars on high-quality items.

We all are guilty of buying clothes just because it was cheap. At times we overlook the fact that it might not fit us. We might get them even when we don’t like the color that much. But if you are wanting to shop for clothes on a budget, its not worth spending 5 dollars on a t-shirt that you are never even going to wear.

How about we do straightforward math? For instance, I have a pair of jeans that cost me 50 dollars. Even if I wear it only once-twice a week for 30 weeks, I would be wearing them a minimum of 60 times. And each time I wear it, it’s technically costing me less than a dollar. That’s exactly why I wouldn’t mind spending a little extra on clothes that fit great.

A higher price tag doesn’t necessarily mean better quality so, identify the material, comfort, and construction before buying.

4) Don’t run after the trends
If you are okay with buying 70 dollars trendy clothing and only wearing it once in your lifetime, go ahead! But let me quickly remind you that it is not how we shop for clothes on a budget.

Trendy clothes only have their moment for a short period. Once the period is over, you randomly throw it into your closet. And let us be honest and accept that it is never coming out again!

Instead of falling quickly for fashion, only buy generic items that fit you well. You should also consider if you can wear them on different occasions. Simply put, if you are constantly buying trendy items but not wearing them for long, they aren’t that cheap.

5) Buy clothes that fit your current body size
We all have body goals but it makes no sense to stack clothes for that moment. What if we never reach that goal size? It is possible so buy the clothes that fit you perfectly at this particular moment.

We all get tempted to buy clothes that are slightly smaller size to motivate ourselves to get in shape. But, let me tell you what I’ve learned. The motivation only comes if you want to make a change in your life from within. It definitely doesn’t come from the external investments. It is not how we shop for clothes on a budget because it only turns out to be more expensive. As we wouldn’t be using such clothes, we will be bound to spend some more on new clothes.

What is worse is buying ‘goal size’ clothing items from the sale, which cannot be returned. I wouldn’t buy such clothes unless the store has a great return policy that works in our favor.

6) Grab clothing sales but do not buy if you don’t need them
We cannot deny the fact that we might find the exact item that we are looking for in the clearance section and if we do, we save fortunes.

Clothing sales are tempting and seems like the best hack to shop for clothes on a budget however, we should get better at only buying items that we genuinely need. We must understand that flash sales lead to crazy adrenaline-fueled purchases. These deals leave you thinking that it is a great offer and in the temptation, you might not make a wise decision. If I were you, I would make a shopping list and shop accordingly.

7) Practice proper clothing care
Every piece of new clothing comes with proper directions and tags. We should maintain the clothes as per the description and direction provided. The first and foremost thing is to understand the material because it’s really easy to ruin them.

It is no rocket science that while washing our clothes we need to wash white and colored clothes separately. In a family of five like mine, it is really easy to randomly toss in the clothes for a wash and ruin our favorite dress. Before you commit such a silly mistake, know what kind of garment it is, and how to appropriately maintain it. Also a quick tip, front-loading washing machine is a better option since it is gentle on our clothes.

Depending on the type of clothing, you might also want to follow the proper storing techniques.

Hang shirts and dresses to avoid creases. Similarly, know that moths eat cashmere, so store them in a plastic container to avoid the damages. Likewise, make sure you store all your white dresses separately because they tend to stain very easily.

Another mistake we make is while ironing them. We must not randomly iron our clothes because we all have instances when we’ve severely burnt our favorite items. Follow the instructions, because that is the key. If we don’t learn how to take care of our clothes, we will never learn how to shop for clothes on a budget. And eventually, it will only get more expensive for us.

Always remember that the more you take care of your existing clothes, the less you will have to spend shopping in the future!

8) Add to your clothing with accessories
If you didn’t know that we could make a boring outfit exciting and fun with a slight help of inexpensive accessories, now you know the trick! Throwing a layered neckpiece, a cool bracelet, a floral scarf, or a chic belt can add so much to the clothes that we already own.

Being a little creative with our clothing and style is always a great way to be stylish in a budget. A little accessorizing can instantly make the basics real fun and the best part is accessories aren’t that expensive. I believe that it’s a great investment so try this the next time you go out to shop for clothes on a budget.

9) Make a list of what you want to avoid impulsive shopping
I make a list as to how much I’m willing to spend on an item right now and I try to spend my budget accordingly. If I want a skirt for the summer but the summer is almost gone, then the ideal thing to do is to save that money to get something for the winter instead.

I am so guilty of walking in the mall with my family on days when I’m not planning to get anything for myself. But when I see some stuff that I like, I instantly run to the store to get that item. Well, is it how we shop for clothes on a budget? No, because at times, I fall in love with the clothes but more often than not, it is something that I don’t need.

Instead of getting such random things, cultivate a complete wardrobe that is filled with pieces that you love and use often.

10) Wash clothes inside out
It isn’t a great idea to wash your clothes often. Wash your clothes only if it is really dirty because, with every wash, you are only damaging the clothes. You might be concerned about your hygiene or perhaps love the smell of laundered clothes. However, in both cases, you only damage your clothes.

Here, we are learning how to shop for clothes on a budget but if we spend a lot of money on laundry then, it makes no sense because ultimately we aren’t saving that much.

Frequent washing of the clothes also costs you more laundry time and money so before tossing them into the machine, inspect if the clothes are dirty. If it is your inner garments, socks, or gym wears, washing them after one wear makes sense. However, if the clothing item is only stained, use a spot remover pen instead.

When you get your clothes washed, the best thing you can do to maintain the health of the clothes is to wash them inside out. Similarly, while drying out your clothes, dry them inside out as it will prevent the discoloration.

11) Go out and shop physically
I love shopping through stores and I believe that it is the best way to go about it. Well, there is no harm in shopping online but, we all have been in a troublesome online shopping situation at least once in our life.

It is just better to physically shop as you will have a large option to choose from. People think that it is time-consuming but we all can dedicate at least a day to get what we want.

Moreover, if a huge event just popped up then buying things online won’t help since we know how long deliveries can take. And I don’t agree that shopping online is a great way to shop for clothes on a budget because if you don’t get your money back in an event you don’t like the clothes then, you are doomed.

Similarly, if you get the stuff physically you will better understand the fit, comfort, and material. Likewise, you won’t have to deal with the mess of exchanging or returning it.

12) Review what you already have and shop accordingly
Holding on to the clothing items that you barely use is only going to occupy the space in your closet. We all tend to buy and accumulate as much stuff as we can. But, that is not the correct way to go about it.

Once in a while, we must review what we have so, take time to face your closet to see the bigger picture before you head out to shop for clothes on a budget.

Do you have a lot of casual dresses but not a single date-worthy outfits? What about shoes? Do you only have stilettos and no comfy shoes? Are you wearing only red-colored outfits?

You’ll find all these answers in your closet itself. See what you have and what fits you. If you don’t need a piece of clothing, get rid of them. Just take some time off to take a look at what you have and what you need and then, shop accordingly.

13) Go for brands you already like
Taking a risk when you are already short of money is not a smart move. The correct thing to do at this moment is to stick to the brands that you like because you already understand the fit, material, and comfort of the clothes that you are about to get.

This is a great way to shop for clothes on a budget as you won’t have to toss them in a corner. Once you get them home, you’ll be wearing them as you are used to loving that sort of stuff.

Also, sometimes the clothes of certain companies just look flattering on you and go perfectly with your style. It is almost like guaranteeing that the item will be frequently used, which makes it worth the money.

14) Avoid online clothes shopping
Online shopping is convenient, easy, and saves time however, there is a lot of online clothing scams these days and that is exactly why I avoid shopping online.

At times, the material that you ordered is different from what you get. Similarly, we face issues with the brand, size, color, delivery time, and what not!

Unless the shop is authorized and trusted, has good reviews, and provides a proper exchange or return policy to its customers, it isn’t a great idea to shop from that online store.

15) Buy from the Low-end retailer/ thrift shops
Some people tend to give away unused or barely used stuff so why not take advantage of it? There are a lot of thrift stores that sell barely used or unused clothes and if you are fine with wearing used clothes then, this is the best option for you.

Usually, the clothes are in good condition and can be worn again so, if you find what you were looking for in a thrift shop then you save a fortune.

It’s a wrap!
