After the Covid-19 outbreak at a seafood market in China in December 2019, 2020 has been challenging for all of us. Almost a year later, here we have over 17 million people in the world who have already been infected by this Covid-19 virus. In such a situation, traveling has become a great deal.
Now that Coronavirus travel restrictions are lifted and international travel has finally resumed, we need to make that extra effort to protect ourselves while traveling because things are different today. From now on, there are a lot of additional precautionary measures one needs to take to stay healthy while traveling.
We as a whole accept that traveling is fun and we do not want to miss any of it for the stress of staying healthy all along. I would be shattered if I am asked to pay for a trip and don’t get to experience the temptation to the fullest because I got sick.
I would like to add that since the Covid-19 outbreak, one thing that constantly runs on my mind during my travel is to not fall sick. We have now come to the terms that living with these safety measures is the new normal. In addition, nobody knows how many more months or years we are supposed to live in this manner. That is why we need to take care of our hygiene while traveling since this is the least we can do.
Okay, now that we have understood that it is paramount to not get sick while traveling, the question is, how do we do that, especially during the Covid-19 scenario? Don’t worry, I am here to help you.
To combine your trip with pleasure and wellbeing, I have provided 12 tips for you to travel safely during and post Covid-19.
1) Destroy those germs
The best way to save ourselves from this virus is by washing our hands at a regular interval. Using soap water to destroy the germs is the smartest and most effective move one can make to prevent the transmission of bacteria and viruses.
At the same time, I am well aware that we might not have access to hand wash and soap all the time. Well, in that case, hand sanitizer is your best friend.
Right from the flights to hotels and restaurants, we are most likely to be accompanied by numerous people. Since we share our space with a lot of people, sanitizing our surroundings is just as important as sanitizing ourselves.
To limit Covid-19, we need to clean our surroundings and to do that, we need sanitizing wipes. Therefore, always carry a travel-size sanitizer and wipes to prevent transmission of any sort of germs. Similarly, keeping our hands off our face is as significant to prevent the germs from getting into our bodies.
2) Wear a mask all the time to limit the transmission of Covid-19
I do not understand why wearing a mask has become such a great deal. We are just requested to cover our faces to reduce the transmission of Covid-19, it is not that we are asked to climb the Mount Everest.
I do not know a better way to make people understand that wearing a mask will limit the transmission of viruses. Moreover, we would not know who is contagious for the symptoms might take time to show up. In the same manner, some cases are asymptomatic as well.
Wearing an antiviral face mask while traveling is the best way of protecting ourselves from bacterias and Covid-19. Therefore, no one should be negligent about it.
3) Keep safe distance
I always ensure to keep a couple of feet of space between the other person and myself while traveling. We wouldn’t know if the person sitting next to us is infected. Thus, staying at a distance would help us avoid the transmission of any sort of virus or bacteria.
Similarly, not just with the physical contact, we are likely to catch Covid-19 through flying bodily liquids as well. Considering this, we must ensure at least 2 feet of physical distance with the other person.
Needless to say that social distancing is the key to keep any sort of viruses from spreading. In conclusion, let’s maintain that physical distance.
4) Hydrate yourself to build immunity against Covid-19
With the focus being on getting from one place to another, it can be challenging for us to monitor our drinking routine. This is the prime reason why dehydration kicks in.
I always carry a bottle of water to constantly remind myself to hydrate throughout my trip. If in any case, you are a forgetful person like me, carry a water bottle. We must remember that our body needs water to function at its best and even more so when we are constantly on the go.
Don’t forget to hydrate yourself while traveling because a hydrated body also gives you that healthy immune system to fight off diseases.
5) Clean your electronics frequently
I have realized that sanitizing our belongings is just as important as sanitizing ourselves and our surroundings. I say that as we could have germs and bacterias transmitting to our bodies from the electronics that we use.
Sanitize your cellphones, earphones, chargers, and just about anything that might transmit a germ, especially corona virus. The best way to go about it would be by using soap water. However, in absence of that, using a sanitizing wipe is ideal. Putting this little effort can ensure your healthiness throughout the trip.
6) Protect yourself from the sun
Protect yourself from the sun if it can easily affect you. The scorching sun gives me migraines and headaches. That is the reason I avoid potential risks for this as well.
Like I mentioned earlier, I get sun-incited migraines and that is the explanation as to why I never walk out without a hat, an umbrella, or having something to cover my head with.
Yes, I understand that you might not have this problem and I am not even asking you to do all of these. But, just make sure that you are on the safe side. As per your convenience, you could carry a hat or an umbrella but using sunscreen and constantly hydrating yourself is essential
7) Do not skip your workout
Working out during travel is equally important as working out on any other day. I emphasize on this point because it is paramount to keep our body active and healthy. Let’s be honest about it and admit that we tend to overeat during our travel. Eating a lot more than the actual requirement might harm our body.
To have a balance, we need to digest those foods as well so, don’t skip your regular workout. In case you don’t have a workout routine, opt for water activities such as swimming, surfing, diving, snorkeling, and so on. You could also try jogging a few miles, this way you will explore the place, at the same time keep yourself fit.
8) Keep a day off while planning your itinerary
Overburdening yourself with 4-5 visits a day is a big no so, visit the places with some time in your hand. Nobody would want to visit a place just for the sake of visiting and saying “ Yes, I have been there”.
Take some time out, get to know about the spot, make memories, and discover yourself for we never know when we get to experience all that again so, keeping a spare day is the smartest decision.
Exhaustion is one of the major problems we face while traveling since our body also needs rest. And if you are, traveling alone, it is even more difficult since you must manage everything on your own so, skip overburdening yourself to avoid exhaustion. Another benefit of having a spare day is you get to reschedule your itinerary in case of harsh weather.
9) Eat at a hygienic place and avoid overeating
I eat at a hygienic restaurant and I only eat foods that are thoroughly cooked. Additionally, I avoid drinking tap water at this stage. I catch a cold easily therefore, I also avoid foods that are too cold.
Now let’s talk about our tendency to overeat. I have been in this position before where I overate and wasted my valuable vacation time. Since then I have realized that we ought to eat only as much as our body requires. After the incident, I only eat 80% and not until I am full and the difference I found was insane. I was physically more active and energetic hence, learn to eat in moderation.
10) Have a proper sleep to build immunity against Covid-19
To ensure a healthy body for our trip, 7-8 hours of sleep overnight is essential. It gives us energy therefore we end up enjoying our vacation to the fullest.
It is also a great idea to give our body enough rest in between for it is not good to push our body to unrealistic limits.
Even an hour nap during the day time does wonders for our body. It is similarly important as our body needs enough rest to build the immunity against corona virus. That is why I make legitimate time for sleep and wake up fully energized and pumped the next morning. Having a proper sleep routine has been beneficial for me to prevent my exhaustion and travel burnouts.
11) Just in case, carry a health-kit
I cannot envision myself heading out without my health kit. It contains medicines for headaches, stomachaches, hydration sachets, anti-diarrheal, adhesive bandages, insect repellent, and anti-bacterial wipes.
Health kit is essential if you are visiting countries like the UK and US where availability of medications over the counter is an issue. Similarly, less developed countries may not have medicals everywhere. Hopefully, you won’t need any of it but ensure that you have them with you.
12) Try not to get drunk
We all have been there, gotten drunk while traveling and in a split second regretted for we didn’t have home comforts. We can still have a few drinks but need to be mindful to have plenty of food before consuming alcohol.
It is rather beneficial to switch to red wine since it is good for our hearts. Also, one of the reasons people gain weight while traveling is because they drink too much. And here I won’t even talk about drugs because it is a huge no.
I am not a health professional and these are precisely my strategies for staying fit and healthy while traveling, especially during and post Covid-19. Therefore, I cannot guarantee that you won’t fall sick at all. I advise you to consult an expert if in any case, you experience sickness.
It’s a wrap!
